Beauty On Vacation!

It's so exciting! Summer has finally arrived and vacation awaits! You've picked out your clothes, packed a good book, and can already feel the sun’s warmth with poolside relaxation mode close behind. And then, there it is. You forgot to schedule the semipermanent makeup appointments for your brows and lips!

Brows

The first hurdle would be finding a good artist who can take you for a last-minute appointment, and the second would be the healing period. (So much for that poolside lounge chair, right?) Well, it’s not all bad news - it's possible to have the first phase completed or “surface healed”, and still make your flight. But plan on taking a bulk of sunscreen (SPF50) to apply continuously.

You can figure seven days is doable, but fourteen days of healing is better. You'll want to avoid excessive sweating during this phase and plan to wear large sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.

Lips

Just a heads up, getting these babies done will need a little bit more advanced planning. The norm is one to two weeks for them to heal, but by week four, all should be good. While they're healing, you'll need to add some extra hygiene steps to your routine, like gently cleansing and moisturizing as they scab over. They won't be ready for kisses for a few weeks, so if you've got a honeymoon or couple’s trip coming up, make sure to schedule well ahead! There’s usually cameras involved and those pictures will be around for a lot longer!

It's best to keep lips moisturized with an SPF lip balm and shielded from the sun after healing. (Here's to that wide-brimmed hat again!) If you smoke, suffer from anemia, or tend to have oil-based skin, you may want to visit with your healthcare provider. These Protecting healed brows from chlorine or saltwater is important, too. Before you go for a dip, apply a thin layer of Vaseline to your brows. Not only does this give them a nice, natural look, but it also creates a barrier that helps prevent fading. Afterward, make sure to rinse the area clean after swimming to avoid letting the salt or chlorine water sit on your skin. Conditions can affect the lip color, and after all that work, you want to care for them as best you can.

Your health should always be a priority, so If you suffer from diabetes you absolutely need clearance from your doctor for any invasive procedures. Also, if you are prone to cold sores you’ll want to visit your healthcare pro to get a prescription for an antiviral. It’s crucial to start taking it 3 days before getting a lip blush and 3 days after.

Skin Care

Traveling to new places can lead to unexpected and exciting surprises, but it can also lead to skin issues. Indulging in different foods and drinks might cause breakouts, while dehydration from lack of water can leave your skin parched. Even abandoning your normal skincare routine can cause your skin to go off the deep end! Part of the solution is to stay vigilant to keep that skin glowing.

Air quality, change in humidity levels, water quality, stress, and deviation from a normal routine can also trigger skin issues. Those of us with sensitive skin, eczema, or acne are more likely to experience them on vacation. And here's the reason why. Our home environment is like a tiny little world, and when we disturb the natural balance of that world, it's like giving our environment a little rattle. The consequences of that shake up can manifest as irritation, acne and other skin symptoms. (Something we want on our "Don't" List", right?)

Pre-travel preparation can help reduce skin problems from occurring, so plan forward and follow these steps before you leave:

1. Begin with a professional exfoliation and cleansing for a fresh start. Let her/him know you’ll be traveling and ask about any specific concerns.

2. Keep your skin hydrated and glowing with plenty of moisturizing. Again, talk with your skin professional about the best products to use in the climate you’ll visit.

3. Shield your skin from the sun's rays with powerful sunscreen protection always. Before, during and even after travel, your future self will thank you.

4. Pamper your skin after a day on the water with some special treatment. That beach sun can be a scorcher. (Believe it or not, that applies to snow’s reflection, as well!)

5. Give your eyes some love with an essential eye cream.

As a side note, your health should always be a priority, so If you suffer from diabetes, you absolutely need clearance from your doctor for any invasive procedures. Also, if you are prone to cold sores you’ll want to visit your health provider to get a prescription for an antiviral. It’s crucial to start taking it 3 days before getting a lip blush and 3 days after.

Closing Thoughts

Don't forget that changes in location and climate can have a significant impact on our inner and outside bodies! From stomach issues to headaches, skin reactions, and muscle soreness, our body can react in various ways. Taking a break and unplugging during a vacation is an amazing way to practice self-care. So, while you may focus on your external beauty, remember that your entire body, mind, and spirit also need some love and attention!

Bon Voyage and may your travels be safe and memorable.
